Tips to Prolong Cat Life Expectancy:

Routine Check-ups – One of the most important things you can do to ensure your cat lives a healthy life, is regular check-ups. When you first bring your cat home, set up an appointment with a veterinarian. You will want to ensure your cat has a clean bill of health and then talk with your vet about anything you can do to keep your kitty healthy. Your vet will set up an immunization schedule with you, test for feline leukemia, worms and other parasites. You will also want to ask your vet how often you need to bring your new pet in for check-ups. Getting your cat routine check-ups is key to catching any health issues that may arise in your cat.

Quality Food – If you want your cat to live a long and healthy life, quality food is very important. Do not just pick out any food on the grocery store shelves. Make sure you take the time to research different food and when in doubt talk with your veterinarian. Feeding your cat the best food possible can ensure he or she is not getting loaded up on empty calories. Proper Exercise – Generally cats don’t need a lot of exercise. However, you should spend some time playing with your cat every day. Make sure your cat doesn’t just lay on the couch and sleep all day as this can cause weight issues. Invest in some cat toys that get your cat up and running around.

Indoor Life – Keeping your cat indoors can significantly increase their life span. Outdoor cats are subject to predators, poisonous plants and other hazards. On average an outdoor cat lives for about 5 years compared to the 13 to 17 years of an indoor cat. If you do have to keep your cat outdoors make sure he has adequate shelter and try to cat proof your yard.
