homemade dog toothpaste for minty fresh breath

Homemade Dog Toothpaste

It is simple to make your own homemade dog toothpaste, and just like you watch what ingredients are in your pup’s food and treats, you can control what goes into his toothpaste. Not only will brushing your pet’s teeth improve his breath but it is necessary to keep good oral care. Just like people they are susceptible to gum disease, which can lead to worse health problems. Try to brush your dogs teeth at least 2-3 times per week if not daily.

  • Place all ingredients in a small food processor or blender. Blend until mint leaves are finely chopped and all ingredients are combined well.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready for use.
  • To brush your dog’s teeth; Hold dog between your legs, reassuring your pup, and speaking in a soft voice.
  • You can either use a child's soft toothbrush or slip your hand in a sock and use your index finger to scoop up small amount of toothpaste and brush using your finger.
  • Move gently over your dogs teeth, making small circles as you would to brush your teeth. Pay extra attention to back teeth and in between where food sticks.
  • After brushing use water on toothbrush or a clean washcloth to rinse your dogs mouth. Provide fresh water for him to drink and rinse more.
  • Caution: (Do not let your dog eat a large amount of toothpaste as coconut oil can give your pup diarrhea, and baking soda can cause electrolyte imbalance.)
