Here is a cute and simple DIY Chalkboard Dog Treat Jar to make for holding goodies for your own sweet pup, or you can make a lovely gift filled with snacks to give away. (Pretty birds, and finicky cats might enjoy one too!) Filled with store bought or homemade treats this fun little jar is much prettier than a cardboard box of doggie bones sitting on your counter. This is also a great project to let the kids in on. You can do the taping and painting and then have the kids put on the fun pet stickers. The chalkboard sides are a fun way to identify what’s in the jar, to write your pets name, new tricks to try, or your pet supply shopping lists.
Supplies Needed for DIY Chalkboard Dog Treat Jar:
Instructions for DIY Chalkboard Dog Treat Jar:
Wash glass jar thoroughly, and allow to air dry. You can use these little “cracker” jars from Walmart -they are generally in the canning aisle near other glass canisters. They come in quart, 2 quart or gallon sizes. (You can also purchase all of the supplies needed using the links above if you like shopping from home.)
Dip a paper towel in vinegar and wipe all surfaces down to remove any oil or fingerprints. Dry very carefully, and make sure there is no lint left on glass surface.
Using painters tape, cover entire jar except for the part you want painted, one reason I like the cracker jar for these is because they have square “windows” already marked by a very light ridge- it makes the work of taping it off much easier. Tape all 4 sides.
Take your jar outdoors- for ventilation. Lay the taped up jar on newspaper, spray 1 coat very lightly to create a “tack” coat. Allow to dry 20 minutes, apply another slightly heavier coat. Allow to dry again and apply a final coat.
Let your canister dry overnight, remove painters tape.
Prep your chalkboard areas by rubbing chalk up and down covering every bit of painted surface. Rub chalk into paint with a soft cloth. Erase all chalk off board. Your chalkboard is now primed and ready to use!
Decorate with pet themed stickers, you can pick these up pretty inexpensively at Walmart, Amazon, or your local craft store.
Don’t forget to include a piece or a box of chalk if you are using it for a gift.
That’s it! Now that you know how to make your own Chalkboard Pet Treat Jar, what treats would you put in it?
