Reduce, Reuse, Recycle- this mantra is perfect for our DIY Upcycled Dog Toy. Don’t run out and buy an expensive dog toy to gift to your pet when it is so easy to make your own. Besides the benefit of using materials that might just otherwise be tossed out, you can customize your colors, and even materials. A super fun toy for Fido. From two t-shirts you can make quite a few of these, so make some up for friends or family member’s pets or make extras for your own pooch- especially if they are rough on their toys.
DIY Upcycled Dog Toy Supplies Needed:
- Several t-shirts of various colors
- Scissors
DIY Upcycled Dog Toy Instructions:
Start by cutting t-shirt’s from bottom hem to neckline into 3 strips from 2”- 6” wide. Don’t worry about it being perfectly straight, the edges will be mostly hidden.
Take your 3 strips hold them together so they are the same length on one end, tie into a knot.
Lay the knotted end of your strips under a heavy object or recruit your husband to hold onto the knotted end (as I did with all the other ones I made later) as you braid strips into a rope.
To braid, fan out strips from the knot, take the strip from the far left and cross it over the center strip like this.
Grab the strip from the far right and place it over the new center strip.
Repeat until you have reached the desired length for your dog toy. Tie a knot in the other end. Trim off the extra material.
Alternatively, you can skip knotting the ends, join them together, and tie each of the 3 ends on side to each other creating a ring.
*Another fun tip: If you have pink, red or white shirts or material around you could make them a Valentine’s themed DIY Upcycled Dog Toy, too!
